Surf the internet without leaving a trace

People seem to be concerned about privacy when browsing the web these days. Maybe it is because of the new privacy features being rolled out by major browsers such as Firefox and Internet Explorer, or maybe they have heard one too many scare stories from their friends. Either way, internet privacy is now a big deal.

NoTrax is a program that claims to have privacy as its number one concern. NoTrax is, in essence, a web browser like any other. There are tabs and history, favorites and search - basically all the features you'll need to feel pretty much at home. The makers say that NoTrax doesn't write information to the registry, encrypts the cache, erases cookies and history files, doesn’t create application logs and stays away from the computer's recycle bin, keeping your internet dealings a private as possible.

Using and configuring NoTrax is simple. You can set the homepage to whatever you like, move back, forward and reload as normal, and generally behave as you would using any other browser. NoTrax doesn't use JavaScript or ActiveX and supports secure TLS/SSL and proxy connections, letting you surf privately both locally and remotely. Another handy NoTrax function is the auto-shutdown tool, which closes the browser down (erasing the history automatically) whenever it remains inactive for a specified length of time.

Unfortunately, I found surfing the web with NoTrax slow, and the program is short on options. It isn't very attractive, and I found some of its options - such as the ability to search a number of odd websites in a pop-up window rather than through a search engine - a little bizarre. Users are definitely looking for more privacy. NoTrax might be a good starting point, but I'd be willing to bet money that there are better options out there.
